Lymphedema

The lymphatic system can be impaired in different ways, but two of the most common are “primary lymphedema” caused by abnormalities from birth or “secondary lymphedema” which are injuries that occur to healthy lymphatic systems resulting in permanent damage.

Lymphedema is managed using complex decongestive physiotherapy (CDP), which consists of skin care, manual lymph drainage, compression therapy and exercise. The use of compression stockings is a positive influence on the management of lymphedema. Compression stockings and garments apply pressure from the outside of the skin to allow lymph fluid to flow back into lymph vessels and veins. Depending on the severity of lymphedema, different levels of compression are needed.
